Can you smell it? The burst of sweet berries, cheesy feet or even... jet fuel? By now most of us know that not all marijuana smells and tastes the same, but why? Well, terpenes are to blame. Terpenes are the essential oils in most plants which are responsible for its fragrance and flavorings. Common in cannabis, there are over 130 different terpenes that write their signature to create the wonderful and tasty strains we love today.
Besides smell and taste, why are terpenes important? Many terpenes such as pinene, limonene and linalool have been proven to have antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Even better, terpenes have been found to have a synergistic effect with THC and other cannabinoids. For example, myrcene, (one of the more common terpenes found in cannabis) helps lower the blood brain barrier allowing cannabinoids to attach to receptors faster creating a more intense psychoactive effect. Prominent in indica's, high myrcene levels are synonymous with often the sought after "couch-lock" effect.
Now that you're in the know, where do you look? Me personally I enjoy the sweeter side of life and partake in more fruity Sativa's. Notably, Golden Pineapple by Phat Panda has a powerful, sweet and tropical flavor to it that sends my mind to a hammock beach side, with blue sky's and not a worry in the world. Whatever your flavor preference might be, I encourage you to try new things. After all, variety is the spice of life.
