When Molly and Andy Honig opened their first pot shop in Kirkland, they knew their lives were about to change dramatically. However, two years later, some of those changes continue to surprise them. One thing that’s been huge has been a growing sense of responsibility to the community they call home. Molly is of the opinion that not only has cannabis “...brought a lot of positives to the state in terms of crime and tax revenues. It’s also holistically socially positive.” Molly has become even more convinced of this as Higher Leaf continues to grow. “Having created forty-five jobs that didn’t exist before has had a huge impact on me. It’s a powerful thing to be able to create something that puts jobs into the community.”
That feeling of responsibility to the community is part of why Higher Leaf is now looking to share the love. This year, our weed shops have teamed up with Attain Housing, a Kirkland area nonprofit that has been helping homeless families build strength and get a new start since 1989. Attain Housing’s mission is to bring our community together to partner with homeless families by providing affordable housing and empowering them with practical case management and hope.
And, we at Higher Leaf, are proud to support that mission. We’re in the middle of an item drive for Attain Housing that lasts through November 30th. We’re asking our customers to bring in personal care items, cleaning supplies, bedding (particularly new or slightly used and freshly washed Queen and Twin sheet sets and blankets), and school supplies to our two store locations in Kirkland and Bellevue. On December 1st, we’ll box the items up and deliver them to Attain’s headquarters.
It truly takes a village to build a stronger community. Lizzie Maslen, our resident HR Specialist, has been overwhelmed by the response so far. “We’ve far surpassed the Drive we did last year. We’ve received donations of food, toiletries, cleaning, and school supplies.” Lizzie continues, “A dental hygienist from a local Dentist's office brought in an entire bag of toothpaste, toothbrushes and dental floss. Some world travelers have been saving hotel shampoos and conditioners for years from their various worldly adventures and brought in a bag absolutely filled with dozens of items. The outpouring of support from our community has been overwhelming and speaks to the palpable sense of compassion, charity, and goodness that shines through in our customer base.”
At Higher Leaf, we love what we do, and we love that we get to use our passion for marijuana to give back to the community. Stop into either one of our weed stores in Bellevue or Kirkland to donate your new or gently used items today.
